Zinc Magnesium v Hot Dip Galv Channel

Do you want enhanced corrosion protection and an appealing finish for your next channel installation?
Then selecting channel with a Zinc Magnesium finish is the ideal solution…
You may have already come across one of the many ‘brand’ names on the market such as Atkore Defender or Arcelor Mittal Magnelis. However, essentially each brand has a similar Zinc Magnesium coating which delivers some distinct advantages over traditional Hot Dip Galvanised channel.
Key Benefits of Zinc Magnesium Channel Over Hot Dip Galvanised:
- Longer Corrosion Protection – The magnesium acts as a corrosion inhibitor for the base metal.
- Self-healing Coating – Cut edges, scratches and perforations are recovered by a protective film.
- Uniform and Impermeable – Creating a far smoother and aesthetic finish.
Our Zinc Magnesium Channel also effectively prevents the formation of Zinc Whiskers, a significant concern in data centers. These whiskers can detach, become airborne, and potentially lead to short circuits in electronic equipment.
Installing a Zinc Magnesium channel saves time and labour for both you the installer and your client.
- Installation: little or no need for galvanising paint to re-coat cut or scratched channel.
- Maintenance: reduced ongoing repairs, is a distinct advantage for the client, and is something to mention when tendering.

What is a Zinc Magnesium Finish?
Our Zinc Magnesium (ZM) finish is produced via a hot dip galvanising molten bath with a zinc-based composition, which includes 2.5% Aluminium and 3% Magnesium applying a layered coating to the base metal.
- Material Standard: BS EN 10025-2:2019 / BS 6946:1988
- Material Specification: S280GD + ZM
- Minimum Yield Strength: 280N/mm²
- Hot Dip Galvanising to: BS EN 10346:2015
- Minimum Average Coating Thickness: 25μm
When Should a Zinc Magnesium Finish be Considered?
Thanks to its composition a Zinc Magnesium finish provides excellent surface and cut-edge corrosion protection, even in outdoor and hostile environments such as extreme temperatures, humidity and those prone to salt or chemical corrosion. A Zinc Magnesium finish also has a self-repairing property that causes a protective film to form around surface edges, weld seams and scratches.
In particular a Zinc Magnesium finish provides superior corrosion protection for electrical equipment, making it an ideal choice for data centres.
